The much-anticipated Bengaluru-Chennai expressway has partially opened for traffic in Karnataka, marking a significant step towards improving regional connectivity. The 68 km stretch from Hoskote to KGF (Bethamangala) is now operational, with around 1,600 to 2,000 vehicles using the newly constructed road daily. This section remains toll-free for now, allowing seamless travel towards Mulbagal and the Andhra Pradesh border. The final three km stretch in Karnataka is expected to be fully operational by year-end, coinciding with the completion of the expressway in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The 260 km expressway, designed for a speed limit of 120 km/h, will directly link Bengaluru to Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has prioritized road safety measures along the operational stretch, ensuring a smooth driving experience. Although toll collection has not yet commenced, NHAI has confirmed that two toll plazas will be installed in Karnataka once official approvals are in place. Similar to the Bengaluru-Mysuru expressway, restrictions on bikes, auto-rickshaws, and tractors are expected.
A crucial advantage of the expressway is its strategic linkage with the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), enhancing connectivity between Dabaspet, Hoskote, Doddaballapur, and Devanahalli. This integration provides better access for motorists from Tumakuru Road and Bengaluru-Hyderabad Road. To further improve access, NHAI has invited tenders to extend the STRR up to the Tamil Nadu border, boosting intra-state and inter-state connectivity.
Despite progress, certain infrastructure challenges remain. Near Hoskote Cloverleaf, a two-metre-wide water pipeline from the Koramangala-Challaghatta (KC) Valley project poses an obstacle, delaying the construction of a 480-metre ramp and an underpass for Kolathur villagers. NHAI is currently in discussions with the minor irrigation department to find a feasible solution.
Another major concern is the traffic congestion on Old Madras Road, affecting expressway access from Bengaluru. Key bottlenecks include SV Road Metro Station, Byappanahalli, Benniganahalli, Tin Factory, and KR Pura. To tackle this, NHAI has proposed a widening project for the Bengaluru-Kolar highway, expanding it from four lanes to ten lanes (six-lane mainline and four-lane service road). With over 90,000 vehicles crossing the Hoskote toll gate daily, this expansion will be crucial in alleviating congestion at TC Palya and Battarahalli.
The expressway is set to bring multiple benefits to commuters and businesses:
The Bengaluru-Chennai expressway marks a transformational infrastructure milestone, offering faster, safer, and more efficient travel. With upcoming expansions, strategic integrations, and planned decongestion measures, the expressway is poised to reshape transportation dynamics between Bengaluru and Chennai. The positive impact on business, real estate, and employment makes it a crucial development for South India’s economic growth.
