After 3 Years of Farmer Protests, Karnataka Drops Plan to Acquire 495 Acres in Devanahalli
Following sustained protests over the last three years, Karnataka’s government has officially pulled back the plan to acquire 495 acres in Devanahalli for its proposed hi-tech defence and aerospace park near Bengaluru International Airport. Announced on June 24, 2025, Industries Minister M.B. Patil confirmed the land would now be exempted from acquisition efforts .

The original plan projected the land would serve as part of a massive industrial zone designed to foster high-tech manufacturing and innovation. Yet, local farmers and residents voiced deep concerns about losing ancestral lands, livelihoods, and community rights. Their sustained agitation ultimately pressured the administration into revising its plan .
While the exemption marks a partial win, protest leaders say they’re far from satisfied: the movement will continue until the state resolves broader grievances—clarifying compensation, rehabilitation, and additional land withdrawal .
This shift in policy reflects a responsive governance model, a balance between infrastructure ambitions and grassroots concerns. As part of a strategic pivot, the government is now expected to reevaluate its acquisition criteria and engagement methods with affected communities .
The aerospace park remains part of Karnataka’s growth strategy, but the revised blueprint will likely shrink the acquisition footprint or propose alternative sites. Future negotiations between government, farmers, and industry stakeholders will be key to charting a viable, socially responsible path ahead.
