Kempegowda International Airport Launches Massive T2 Expansion Project, Targeting 2028 Completion
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport has approved the expansion of Terminal 2, adding 2.78 lakh sq m, 40 apron stands, and a 28,000-sq-m walkway connecting Terminals 1 & 2. The ambitious upgrade aims to boost capacity, streamline connectivity, and finish by 2028.
Kempegowda International Airport (Bengaluru) has officially set in motion its large-scale expansion plan for Terminal 2 (T2), with an expected completion date of 2028. The project, greenlit recently by airport authorities, is designed to accommodate rising passenger traffic and strengthen connectivity within the airport precinct.
Here are the key elements of the expansion:
• New Space Added: Terminal 2 will see an increase of 2.78 lakh square metres in built area. This expansion aims to handle more passengers, improve amenities, and provide more operational space for airlines and support services.
• Apron Stands: The project includes the creation of 40 apron stands—the parking bays where aircraft are parked, loaded/unloaded, refueled, and maintained. This will help reduce congestion on the ramp and improve turnaround times.
• Walkway Connection: An elevated or otherwise direct 28,000 square metre walkway will link Terminal 1 (T1) with Terminal 2. This aims to offer seamless transit for passengers moving between the two terminals, cutting down transfer time and improving convenience.
Why This Matters
With passenger numbers climbing steadily, existing infrastructure at Bengaluru’s airport has been under pressure. Expansion of T2 will not only help distribute traffic more evenly but also allow for newer, modern facilities and technologies to be integrated in line with global airport standards. Better connectivity between terminals reduces hassle for connecting passengers and operational delays for airlines.
Challenges & Considerations
• The project deadlines are ambitious. To meet the 2028 target, planning, contracting, environmental clearances, and construction will need to proceed without major delays.
• Budgetary and funding alignment will be critical; large public-infrastructure work often faces cost overruns.
• Managing airport operations during construction will require careful staging so that current flights & passenger services remain minimally disrupted.
Impact
When completed, the T2 expansion at Kempegowda is expected to:
• Increase capacity for both domestic and international flights;
• Reduce congestion in current terminals;
• Enhance passenger experience via improved facilities and more streamlined movement;
• Support Bengaluru’s growth as a major international aviation hub.
