Bengaluru’s traffic woes have caught national attention once again, with Deputy Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy (HDK) pushing a bold infrastructure plan — constructing two major underground tunnel roads at a whopping cost of ₹50,000 crore. These tunnels aim to decongest the overburdened city roads and improve commute time drastically.

The two proposed corridors are:

• North–South Tunnel (18.5 km): From Esteem Mall (Hebbal) to Silk Board

• East–West Tunnel (28.5 km): From KR Puram Circle to Nayandahalli (Mysuru Road)

These underground corridors would be developed under the BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) model. The Karnataka government has committed viability gap funding of ₹19,000 crore and is seeking substantial financial assistance from the Central Government to complete the project.

H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasized the urgency of easing Bengaluru’s traffic and called for central collaboration, considering the scale and strategic importance of the project. He mentioned that the proposals and DPRs are already in motion, with public consultation underway.

The ambitious plan includes toll collection over a 30-year period for revenue recovery. Officials believe this initiative, if executed efficiently, could turn Bengaluru into a model city for urban tunnel transport. However, urban mobility experts remain divided, citing concerns about the environmental impact, long construction timelines, and whether such mega-projects provide better returns compared to enhancing public transport systems.

Nonetheless, with cabinet approval already in place and tenders expected soon, all eyes are now on the Central Government’s response to Karnataka’s proposal.
